NMA Foundations of Management (FoM) Program
Foundation of Management (FoM) is an NMA program for employees who are transitioning to management roles. FoM is the product of a comprehensive job task analysis study to identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities managers and supervisors need to perform competently.
FoM comprises three courses taught in a group discussion format for 28 hours of classroom time that covers a total of 14 chapters of book material. Class participants may purchase a soft-bound Participant manual or e-book for the FoM program. Classes are typically around lunchtime on the first shift.
Course 1: Management Fundamentals (5 Weeks)

- Discovering the Leader Within You
- Developing Effective Communication Skills
- Solving Problems and Making Ethical Decisions
- Delivering First-Rate Customer Service
Course 2: Managerial Functions (5 Weeks)
Topics covered include:
- Planning for Goal Achievement
- Organizing Work, Relationships, and Teams
- Staffing, Training and Appraising Human Resources
- Leading and Motivating People
- Controlling to Improve Results
Course 3: Business Concepts for Managers (4 Weeks)
Topics covered include:
- The Business Environment
- The Role of Economics in Business
- Basic Concepts of Information Technology
- Managing Accounting and Financial Information
